Creative engineering: A way to stop car crashes
In this project, we have to come up with a solution to a problem. Any problem in this world that would be possible. We thought of having cars installed with electromagnets so that way, when they get too close while going fast enough, they prevent each other from crashing.
Concepts
Magnets work by emitting a magnetic field that does not intersect with any other field of the same polarization but combine with fields with opposite polarization. For this project, we decided we would use electromagnets which can be activated by running a current through it. This kind of magnet is perfect because it can be turned on it the car crashed going faster than 10 mph, as to avoid accidents in a parking lot.
Reflection
This didn't feel a lot like a project, but more of a thought experiment, and looking back on it now, it seems like the magnetic cars would actually cause more accidents to happen compared to accidents it could prevent. Also, cars are designed to take as much damage to prevent the driver from getting hurt by crumpling and increasing the impact time. Also, in order for it to work, every cars has to have it installed.
